Description: | A vintage Afghan Ersari carpet, size 7'8" x 4'8", circa 1930. This hand-knotted carpet comes from the Ersari village in Afghanistan, and is characterized by a repeating series of "guls" or abstract flowers in the spare primary field. These particular "gul" motifs are sometimes referred to as "Elephant's Foot" designs, as they can be viewed as the footprints of an elephant, and are filled with smaller iconographic motifs, including the ever-important star motifs, floral sprays, and more. The primary field is enclosed within a reciprocal outer border, which has alternating light and dark elements, signaling the light and dark days of life, and hoping for more good days ahead than bad ones. Wool pile on a cotton foundation. In very good condition for its age and weaving style. A one of a kind piece, and one which carries with it a great deal of cultural depth and meaning!
