An antique Turkish Oushak oriental carpet, oversized, size 25'2" x 15'7", circa 1890-1900.  This massive antique hand-knotted Oushak carpet is an outstanding example of the aesthetic that makes antique Oushak rugs so prized in the West, as it is characterized by a large scale design, with simple stylistic elements that represent floral motifs, but express them in a simple, stylized way that is more geometric than curvilinear in its execution.  This simple, laid back aesthetic, with its large elements and uncluttered field, is among the most popular with Western buyers, interior designers, and rug enthusiasts in Europe and North America.  The softly hued central field is enclosed within a wide outer border, and is demarcated by a series of larger and smaller cartouches, which nicely balance the asymmetry and whimsy of the central field.  Wool pile on a cotton foundation.  In excellent condition for its age, size, and weaving style.
