Description:

A Brussels mythological tapestry from the first half of the 17th century, woven by the workshop of Katharina van den Eynde.  The tapestry’s central panel features a carpenter with his mallet (likely the Greek god of craftsmen and fire, Hephaestus) kneeling before a woman (likely his wife, the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite).  Enclosed within a border on three sides, incorporating putti, busts, flowers, strapwork, scrolls and eagles, and two weaver’s marks on the right side selvage, one of Jacob Geubels, and one of his widow, Katharina van den Eynde, Wool with silk inlay.
