Subject: | The arrival of a wise man, possibly Jesus with his Apostles, giving alms to the poor |
Description: | A Flemish allegorical tapestry from the first half of the 17th century, possibly a New Testament Biblical tapestry, envisioning a scene in which various figures seek guidance and help from a wise man that has arrived before them. The wise man may be construed as Jesus, and the men with him his Apostles. The visiting men seem to be giving alms to the poor, supporting the interpretation of the wise man as Jesus. The central scene is enclosed within an elaborate border of fruiting and flowering, interconnected by garlands, ribbon-ties, and swags. Wool with silk inlay.
Hanging: The tapestry comes ready for hanging, with linen backing and a strip of hook and loop tape at the top end, which can be connected to the opposite side of the supplied hook and loop tape, which could be tacked to your wall. For those who prefer the use of a tapestry rod, we can add the appropriate size loops to accommodate your needs. We now have a large selection of antique tapestry rods available as well, which we can provide detail upon request.
