Description: | Antique Persian Kashan Silk Pictorial Rug with the Lovers Leyli and Majnun An antique Persian Kashan silk pictorial rug from Persian Gallery New York, size 6'6" x 4'0". This delicate handwoven silk carpet features perhaps the most famous of ancient Persian love stories, that of Leyli and Majnun, the tragic lovers whose tale many consider to be an ancient Arabic precursor to that of Romeo and Juliet. This finely woven rug features the doomed lovers by the upper arch, framed between symbolic willow and cypress trees, with other scenes unfolding below. The stylized central field is enclosed within an intricate outer border, replete with several cartouches that capture some of the beautiful lovelorn poetry from this epic romance. Excellent condition. Short, fine silk pile. A great choice to add character and old world charm to even the most modern home decor. This delicate piece is best suited as a wall hanging, but can be used as a floor covering in a low traffic area, or as a decorative accent. A rare and exceptional find!
